Love and Marriage

One of my goals this year is to read at least 25 five books  on various subject matters.  Periodically there will be listed books that I have read and would like to share with those who may be interested as well as books that are being considered as future readings. The subject focused on this go round happens to be love and marriage. Take a look and tell me what you think. The first three I have read already and have included them because they were great reads and instrumental in helping me grow as a christian woman, in my prayer life and as a wife to my husband.

Marriage should be based on love, right? But does it seem as though you and your spouse are speaking two different languages? New York Times  bestselling author Dr. Gary Chapman guides couples in identifying, understanding, and speaking their spouse’s primary love language-quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch. By learning the five love languages, you and your spouse will discover your unique love languages and learn practical steps in truly loving each other.

919244_w185Bestselling author Stormie Omartian inspires women to develop a deeper relationship with their husbands by praying for them. The Power of a Praying Wife—now with a fresh new cover design— is packed with practical advice on praying for specific areas of a husband’s life including his decision-making, fears, spiritual strength, role as father and leader, and his faith and future. Every woman who desires a closer relationship with her husband will appreciate the life illustrations, select Scripture verses, and the assurances of God’s promises and power for their marriage.

451876_w185Dr. Emerson Eggerichs’ book, Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires, the Respect He Desperately Needs, is based on the biblical passage from Ephesians 5:33 (But every husband must love his wife as he loves himself, and wives should respect their husbands – GODS WORD® translation). His premise is that communication between a husband and wife is often frustrated because of the vastly different ways in which men and women perceive love. Women are wired to need unconditional love and men need to feel unconditionally respected. Revitalize the love in your marriage!

scdIn the classic bestseller His Needs, Her Needs, Willard F. Harley, Jr., identifies the ten most vital needs of men and women and shows husbands and wives how to satisfy those needs in their spouses. He provides guidance for becoming irresistible to your spouse and for loving more creatively and sensitively, thereby eliminating the problems that often lead to extramarital affairs.

473158Marriages may be made in heaven, but they must be nurtured here on earth. In this new paperback edition of Dr. Gary Chapman’s bestselling book, The Five Love Languages, he explains how people communicate love in different ways, and shares the wonderful things that happen when men and women learn to speak each other’s language. Chapters are categorized by love language and each one ends with simple steps to express a specific language to your spouse and guide your marriage in the right direction.

What’s on your reading list for this year? Have you any books you wouldn’t mind sharing on this specific subject?  If so please do so OR if you’ve already read any of the books listed go ahead and tell us what you think.  Looking forward to hearing from you;=)

  1. I have read “His Needs Her Needs” before my marriage and read “The Power of A Praying Wife” last year. “His Needs Her Needs” helps to understand each other’s needs. “The power of a praying wife” helps me to look to God in how to be a godly wife.

I have been hearing about the “Five Love Languages” from my friends. Great that you have the time to read. Hope you can reach your goal 🙂

    • Would you refer any of these books to a friend? I have read “The Power of A Praying Wife” years ago and thought is was a wonderful read. I felt it helped to guide me toward the scriptures and intercession for my husband opposed to acting out in ways that pleased the flesh. It was a testimony also of how the author Stormie was able to be an instrument used by God in her own marriage as well. Thanks for the comment Tienny I appreciate it.

  2. Finally I’ve made it over here to check out your list!

I’m a big fan of the Love Languages Book. I’ll have to check out the others.
Inspires me to do a post with my favorite relationship books.

  3. I have 2 copies of the 5 Love Languages on my coffee table and have been trying to get my husband to read it with me for several months now. Wish me luck!

  5. I have read Power of a Praying Wife, His Needs Her Needs, and The 5 Love Languages and I would recommend them all. They all gave great insight as to how God wants us to live while married. They are also encouraging to turn to when your marriage is going through some things.
Another book I would recommend is Boundaries in Marriage by Henry Cloud and John Townsend. It helped us establish boundaries with each other without guilt or resentment.

    • Thanks for the recommendation simpleighorganized! I will check for the book Boundaries in Marriage from my local library. I think it’s great to take advantage of any tools and opportunities to improve a troubled marriage or better a good one ;-). Thanks for your comment.

The only way to get love is to be lovable. It's very irritating if you have a lot of money. You'd like to think you could write a check: 'I'll buy a million dollars' worth of love.' But it doesn't work that way. The more you give love away, the more you get. - Warren Buffet
